Black History Month

Authors: OPTS Home Planning Team

After an awakening few months, September saw media giant ITV take an explicit stand against racism, defending Diversity’s poignant performance on Britain’s Got Talent last month which has now received over 24,000 Ofcom complaints. If you haven’t already seen it, please take 4 minutes and 17 seconds to watch this in full, it’s powerful!

ITV have since kicked off the final quarter of a challenging year with new channel idents narrated by black celebrities, including Maya Jama and Ashley Banjo, with commissioned programmes running throughout October as part of Black History Month.

But thankfully, ITV are not alone. We’re seeing multiple brands and media partners take active involvement in Black History Month. Notably, TikTok, who have launched their “My Roots” campaign which will run in-app as well as across OOH for the remainder of the month, celebrating the platform’s black artists and content creators. TikTok will also be presenting Black History, Black Present and Black Future – a series of live panel discussions that cover topics including black hair, beauty and fashion, as well as mental health and black history, featuring the likes of Alison Hammond and comedians Chunkz and Filly.
